How do I know when to get a haircut?

There are many signs that can indicate you are due for a fresh cut. However, if you are thinking about changing up your style and getting a new look, there is no need to wait on scheduling an appointment for a cut!

Split ends and dry hair is the number one sign you need a hair cut. It is clear that you have split ends if you see "Y splits" on the ends of your hair. Another clear sign you need a cut is if your hair is limp and lacks volume. If you are unsatisfied with the way your hair looks and spend hours trying to make it look halfway decent, then this could indicate you need a reshape and try a different style that will make it easier to maintain and do your hair every day. Further, another sign you need a cut is if your hair does not have the same consistency in thickness throughout. You hair will also tangle more easily as your hair dries out. Finally, if you have curly hair and it no longer has the bounce you are looking for, it is time for a fresh cut.

It is important to trim your hair regularly when you discover these signs because getting trims will keep your hair looking healthy, prevent frizzing and tangling, and will remove unwanted split ends. How should I prepare when getting my hair colored?

When getting your hair colored, there are a few things you should do to make the process go smoothly for you and your hair dresser. It important to make sure to not wash your hair with shampoo directly before an appointment. Having a natural layer acts as a barrier against chemicals in the color dye. Generally, avoid washing your hair with shampoo in the 24 hours before your appointment. Similarly, do not try to style your hair before getting it colored. It is best to leave it natural. To help your hair stylist, feel free to bring in ideas and photos for how you want your hair to be styled.

To keep your hair color looking fresh and not worn out, it is recommended that you get your hair colored every four to eight weeks. Getting your roots colored should be done every six weeks about and if you are just adding highlights to your hair, that should be done every two to four months depending on how visible you want your highlights to be.

What is hair weaving?

Hair weaving is when hair extensions are added to already existing hair. Hair weaving can be done through pasting, fusing, hair bonding, or netting. Fusion will give you the most natural look, however it is more time consuming and expensive. But, overall, weaving is a very cheap procedure that will give your hair more volume as it is very effective for individuals with hair thinning, patchiness, baldness, or slow hair growth. Sometimes confused with hair extensions, weaves are sewn directly onto flat cornrows. Whereas, hair extensions are typically attached to natural hair with help of a clamp or adhesive. Weaves and hair extensions can make your hair feel a lot more secure, and are therefore a great alternative to wigs. Weaves and hair extensions are also easy to maintain and only have to be washed every week to a month depending on how active you are and other factors.

How often should I wash my hair?

It is recommended that you do not wash your hair every day. Washing your hair too much can cause the hair to strip and become brittle.  At the most, you should wash your hair every other day. You can gauge how often to wash your hair based on itchiness or if it becomes visibly oily. If you are an active person, you can still skip the shampoo and rinse your hair with water and conditioner. How often you have to wash your hair depends on your hair type as well. Those with fine, straight hair are going to have to wash with shampoo more frequently since it will become oily more quickly.
